How do I make an image background transparent?

What does the tolerance setting do?

Tolerance sets how far a color can be from the chosen background color and still be removed. Keep it low for a flat background; raise it for slightly uneven backgrounds, soft shadows or JPG noise. If parts of your subject disappear, lower it again.

Why is white inside my logo kept, or removed?

“Background only” removes the color only where it connects to the image edges or the spot you clicked, so white areas inside your subject are kept. “Every matching pixel” removes the color everywhere, such as the holes in letters. Shift-click to remove extra areas that aren't connected.

No. It removes one background color, so it works best for logos, signatures, scanned drawings, icons and products photographed against a plain backdrop. Edge smoothing fades the outline and removes the background's color tint from edge pixels, so there's no white halo on dark pages.

Which formats keep the transparency?

PNG and WebP. JPG can't store transparency, so it isn't offered. Very large images are saved at up to 16 megapixels so phones don't run out of memory.
