Different places want different image formats: a website may prefer WebP, an old program only opens JPG, and a logo needs PNG to keep its transparent background. Converting between them takes seconds once you know what each format is good at. This guide explains the formats, the trade-offs and how to convert images in bulk with the free Image Converter.

Which format should you use?

FormatBest forTransparencyCompression
JPGPhotosNoLossy: small files, slight quality loss
PNGLogos, screenshots, graphics with textYesLossless: exact, but large for photos
WebPPhotos and graphics on websitesYesLossy or lossless, usually smaller than JPG or PNG

As a rule of thumb: JPG for photos you need to share anywhere, PNG for graphics and anything with transparency, and WebP for your own website.

Common conversions

  • PNG to JPG makes photo files much smaller and opens everywhere. Transparent areas can't survive, because JPG has no transparency: the converter fills them with white.
  • WebP to JPG helps when an app or older program won't open WebP files, which is common after saving images from websites.
  • HEIC to JPG turns iPhone photos, which are saved as HEIC by default, into files that open on any computer, website or app.
  • TIFF to JPG or PNG turns large files from scanners and design programs into images that open anywhere and are easy to share.
  • JPG to PNG doesn't improve quality: whatever was lost in the JPG stays lost. Do it when software demands PNG.
  • JPG or PNG to WebP shrinks images for a website, often noticeably, while keeping them sharp.

How to convert images with Graph Maker

  1. Open the Image Converter and add your images: drag them in or click to choose. You can add several at once, or paste a direct image link.
  2. Choose the target format: JPG, PNG or WebP.
  3. Set the quality for JPG and WebP; the default 90% keeps photos looking crisp with a much smaller file. Lower it for even smaller files.
  4. Resize if you like with the resize slider, from 100% (original size) down to 10%.
  5. Convert, then download each image or all of them together as a ZIP file.

The images are converted in your browser, so they aren't uploaded anywhere.

Tips for converting without surprises

  • Keep the originals, especially when converting to JPG, since lossy compression can't be undone.
  • Convert once. Saving a JPG as JPG again and again adds a little more loss each time.
  • Check transparent images after converting to JPG: the white fill may need a different background, in which case use PNG or WebP instead.
  • Use WebP for the web, JPG for compatibility. WebP is supported by all modern browsers, but some older software and email clients still expect JPG.
  • To make files smaller without changing format, use the Image Compressor; for exact dimensions, the Image Resizer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert PNG to JPG without losing quality?

JPG always compresses with some loss, but at 90% quality or higher the difference is very hard to see in photos. For graphics with sharp edges or text, PNG or lossless WebP keep them crisper.

How do I convert WebP images to JPG?

Add the WebP files to the Image Converter, choose JPG as the target format and convert. You can convert many files at once and download them as a ZIP.

How do I convert HEIC photos from an iPhone to JPG?

Add the HEIC files to the Image Converter, choose JPG and convert. Safari opens HEIC directly; in other browsers the converter downloads a HEIC decoder (about 2 MB) the first time, and the photos are still converted on your device. Converting also removes their location and other metadata.

Why did my transparent background turn white?

JPG can't store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white when converting to JPG. Choose PNG or WebP to keep the background transparent.
