How Discounts Add Up
A percent-off discount multiplies the price by (1 − discount). Stacked discounts don't simply add: 25% off and then an extra 10% off the sale price is 32.5% off in total, not 35%, because the second discount applies to the already reduced price.
The Formulas
Sale price = price × (1 − discount)
Stacked = 1 − (1 − d₁)(1 − d₂)
Original = sale price ÷ (1 − discount)
Sales tax is charged on the discounted price.
Shopping Smarter
- •Compare the final price, not the percentage, across stores
- •Check the price history; some sales start from an inflated price
- •A dollar-off coupon is worth more on cheaper items
- •Factor in shipping and return costs
- •Only buy it if you'd want it at the sale price anyway
