Question 1

What is a histogram?

Accepted Answer

A histogram shows how numeric data is distributed. It splits the range of values into equal-width intervals called bins and draws a bar for each bin, with the bar's height showing how many values fall inside it. It quickly reveals where values cluster, how spread out they are, and whether the distribution is symmetric or skewed.

Question 2

What is the difference between a histogram and a bar chart?

Accepted Answer

A bar chart compares separate categories, such as products or cities, and its bars can be listed in any order. A histogram shows the distribution of one numeric variable: its horizontal axis is a continuous number line divided into bins, so the order is fixed and the bars touch with no gaps between them.

Question 3

How many bins should a histogram have?

Accepted Answer

The automatic setting uses Sturges' rule (about log2(n) + 1 bins for n values) and rounds the bin width to a tidy number such as 1, 2, 5 or 10. Too few bins hide the shape of the data, while too many make it noisy. Choose 'Set the number of bins' or 'Set the bin width' to control the bins yourself.

Question 4

Which bin does a value on the edge belong to?

Accepted Answer

Each bin includes its lower edge and excludes its upper edge, so with bins 60–70 and 70–80 a score of exactly 70 is counted in 70–80. The last bin also includes its upper edge so the largest value is always counted. The frequency table under the chart lists the exact count and percentage for every bin.

Question 5

How do I enter data for the histogram?

Accepted Answer

Type or paste numbers separated by commas, spaces, semicolons or new lines — a column copied from Excel or Google Sheets works as-is. Anything that isn't a number is skipped and listed so you can fix it. The count, mean, median, standard deviation, minimum and maximum of your data appear below the chart.

Bin	Count	Percent
50–60	2	5.0%
60–70	6	15.0%
70–80	13	32.5%
80–90	10	25.0%
90–100	9	22.5%
