Question 1

What is a funnel chart?

Accepted Answer

A funnel chart shows how a number shrinks as it moves through the stages of a process — for example, website visitors who view a product, add it to their cart, start checkout and finally buy. Each stage's width is proportional to its value, so the narrowing shape makes the biggest losses easy to spot.

Question 2

What is the difference between % of first and % of previous?

Accepted Answer

'% of first' compares each stage with the top of the funnel and shows overall conversion: 800 purchases from 10,000 visits is 8%. '% of previous' compares each stage with the one just before it and shows step-by-step conversion: 800 purchases from 1,200 checkouts is 66.7%.

Question 3

What is drop-off and how do I use it?

Accepted Answer

Drop-off is how many were lost between one stage and the next — the previous stage's count minus the current stage's count. The step with the largest drop-off, or the lowest '% of previous', is usually the bottleneck worth fixing first, such as a confusing sign-up form or checkout page.

Question 4

How should I order the stages?

Accepted Answer

List the stages from the top of the funnel down, one per line as a name, a colon and a number, for example 'Added to cart: 2,500'. Each stage is normally smaller than the one before. If a later stage is larger, its '% of previous' goes above 100%, which usually means a stage is missing or out of order.

Question 5

What are funnel charts used for?

Accepted Answer

Funnel charts are common for sales pipelines (leads to closed deals), marketing and e-commerce conversion, recruiting (applicants to hires), app onboarding and support tickets. Stages are shaded from dark to light blue by default, and you can switch to a single custom color to match your brand.

Stage	Count	% of First	% of Previous	Drop-off
Website visits	10,000	100.0%	—	—
Product views	6,000	60.0%	60.0%	4,000
Added to cart	2,500	25.0%	41.7%	3,500
Started checkout	1,200	12.0%	48.0%	1,300
Purchased	800	8.0%	66.7%	400
