Measuring a Trade
Profit is what you get back from selling, plus any dividends, minus everything you paid, commissions included. The return divides that profit by your total cost. The yearly (annualized) return makes trades of different lengths comparable: doubling your money in 10 years is about 7.2% a year.
The Formulas
Profit = shares × sell − sell fee + dividends − cost
Return = profit ÷ cost
Yearly return = (1 + return)^(365 ÷ days) − 1
Cost = shares × buy price + buy commission.
Before You Sell
- •In the US, gains on shares held over a year usually get lower long-term tax rates
- •Losses can offset gains for tax purposes, within limits
- •Fees matter more on small trades
- •Compare your return with an index fund over the same period
- •Decide on exit prices before emotions get involved
