How RMDs Work
Traditional IRAs, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs and most workplace plans require yearly withdrawals once you reach RMD age: 73 if you were born between 1951 and 1959, and 75 if you were born in 1960 or later. Each year's RMD is last December 31's balance divided by the distribution period for your age. Roth IRAs have no RMDs for the original owner.
The Formulas
RMD = Dec 31 balance ÷ distribution period
Age = distribution year − birth year
Next balance = (balance − RMD) × (1 + return)
If your spouse is more than 10 years younger and your sole beneficiary, the IRS Joint Life table gives a smaller RMD. Inherited accounts follow different rules.
Managing RMDs
- •Missing an RMD can cost a 25% excise tax (10% if fixed quickly)
- •Delaying your first RMD to April 1 means two RMDs in one year
- •Calculate each IRA's RMD, but you may take the total from any of your IRAs
- •Qualified charitable distributions can satisfy RMDs tax-free from age 70½
- •Confirm the amount with your plan provider or a tax adviser
