How Fuel Cost Is Calculated
Divide the distance by your car's miles per gallon to get the gallons used, then multiply by the price per gallon. In countries that use litres per 100 km, multiply the distance by the consumption and divide by 100. Real-world consumption is often higher than the official figure, especially at highway speeds, in cold weather or with a heavy load.
The Formulas
Gallons = miles ÷ mpg
Litres = km × L/100 km ÷ 100
Cost = fuel used × price
Per person = cost ÷ people
Tolls, parking and wear on the car aren't included.
