Most clips have something to lose at the start or end: fumbling with the camera, a long pause, someone saying "is it recording?". Trimming keeps just the part that matters, makes the file smaller and gets it under upload limits. This guide explains how trimming works, how to pick your times and how to cut a clip with the free Video Cutter.

How trimming without quality loss works

Most video editors decode the whole clip and compress it again when you save, which takes time and loses a little quality. The Video Cutter takes a faster route: it copies the original video and audio data between your start and end times without re-encoding, so the picture and sound are exactly as good as the original and the cut takes seconds.

The trade-off is precision. Compressed video stores full pictures, called keyframes, only every so often, typically every second or two, and the frames in between are saved as changes. When video is cut without re-encoding, the clip has to begin at a keyframe, so the result may start a moment earlier than the exact time you typed. For trimming the start and end of a clip, that's rarely noticeable.

Picking your times

  1. Play the video in any player and note the times where you want it to start and end.
  2. Allow a little margin. Starting half a second early avoids clipping the first word.
  3. Write the times as HH:MM:SS, hours, minutes and seconds. 00:00:05 is five seconds in; 00:01:30 is one and a half minutes.

How to trim a video with Graph Maker

  1. Open the Video Cutter and click to upload a video: MP4, WebM or MOV, up to 100 MB.
  2. Enter the start time in Start Time (HH:MM:SS), such as 00:00:05.
  3. Enter the end time in End Time (HH:MM:SS), such as 00:00:42.
  4. Click Cut Video! The first time, the processing engine takes a few seconds to load.
  5. Check the output video, which plays in the page, then download it.

The video is processed in your browser, so files from your device aren't uploaded anywhere.

What to do with the trimmed clip

  • Make a GIF from a short moment with the Video to GIF Converter; trimming first keeps the GIF small. See How to Make a GIF from a Video.
  • Share it in a chat or email, now that it's shorter and lighter.
  • Upload it where there's a length or size limit, such as a form or a social network.

Frequently asked questions

How do I cut the beginning off a video?

Enter the time where you want the video to start as the start time, enter the end of the video as the end time, and cut. The part before the start time is removed.

Does trimming a video reduce its quality?

Not with the Video Cutter: it copies the original video and audio without compressing them again, so quality is unchanged.

Why does my trimmed video start slightly early?

Because the clip has to begin at a keyframe when it isn't re-encoded. Keyframes are usually a second or two apart, so the start can shift by up to that much.
