A photo that opens sideways, a selfie that comes out mirrored, a scan that's upside down: turning or flipping an image is one of the most common quick fixes. This guide explains the difference between rotating and flipping, why photos sometimes appear sideways, and how to fix them with the free Image Flip & Rotate tool.

Rotate vs flip

  • Rotating turns the whole image around its center, like turning a printed photo on a table. A 90° turn changes a landscape image into a portrait one.
  • Flipping mirrors the image. A horizontal flip swaps left and right, as in a mirror; a vertical flip turns it upside down and mirrors it at the same time.

Rotating never changes what's in the picture, only which way is up. Flipping creates a mirror image, so text reads backwards and left becomes right.

Why photos show up sideways

Phones usually save every photo the same way round and add a small note in the file, called orientation data, saying which way to turn it. Most modern apps follow the note; some older programs, email clients and websites ignore it and show the photo sideways. Saving a rotated copy, with the turn built into the pixels, makes it display correctly everywhere.

When to flip an image

  • Mirrored selfies. Front cameras often save a mirror image, so writing on your shirt reads backwards. A horizontal flip fixes it.
  • Design balance. A person looking off the edge of a page can be flipped to face into the layout, as long as there's no text or recognizable landmark in the shot.
  • Patterns and graphics, such as making a matching left and right version of an icon.

How to rotate or flip an image with Graph Maker

  1. Open Image Flip & Rotate and drop a PNG, JPG or WebP image onto the page, or click to upload one.
  2. Use the transform buttons: Rotate 90° CW (clockwise), Rotate 90° CCW (counterclockwise), Rotate 180°, Flip Horizontal and Flip Vertical. You can combine them; the preview shows the result.
  3. Choose the output format: PNG (lossless, keeps transparency), JPG (smaller files) or WebP (modern, compact).
  4. Download the result.

The image is processed in your browser, so it isn't uploaded anywhere.

Tips

  • Rotate in 90° steps for photos taken the wrong way round. For a slightly crooked horizon, crop a little and straighten in a photo editor instead.
  • Avoid flipping photos with text, logos or well-known places, since mirrored versions look wrong to people who know them.
  • Save as PNG to avoid any extra loss, then convert or compress afterwards if you need a smaller file.
  • Need more edits? The Image Editor also crops and adjusts brightness and color.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rotate a picture 90 degrees?

Upload it to Image Flip & Rotate, click Rotate 90° CW or Rotate 90° CCW, and download the result.

How do I mirror an image?

Click Flip Horizontal. The image is reflected left to right, as if seen in a mirror.

Does rotating an image reduce quality?

Rotating in 90° steps and flipping move pixels without blending them, so nothing is lost. Saving as JPG adds a little compression; choose PNG if you want the exact pixels.
