Cropping cuts away the parts of a picture you don't need. A good crop removes distractions, puts the subject in the right place and fits the shape a website or app expects, such as a square post or a round profile picture. This guide covers composition tips, common shapes and how to crop several images quickly with the free Image Cropper.

Why crop a photo?

  • Remove distractions, such as a stranger at the edge of the frame or clutter on a desk.
  • Fix the composition by moving the subject off-center or straightening the balance of the picture.
  • Fit a required shape: square posts, widescreen banners or circular avatars.
  • Focus attention on a face, a product or a detail.

Composition tips

  • Use the rule of thirds. Picture the frame divided into a 3 × 3 grid and place the subject or the horizon on one of the lines rather than in the middle.
  • Leave room in the direction of movement or gaze. A person looking right needs more space on the right.
  • Don't cut people at the joints. Cropping exactly at the knees, elbows or wrists looks awkward; crop between them.
  • Keep enough pixels. Every crop throws pixels away; if you'll show the result large, start with a big photo.

How to crop an image with Graph Maker

  1. Open the Image Cropper and drop in one or more images, or click to choose them. You can also paste a direct image link.
  2. Choose the shape: rectangle or circle.
  3. Set the size. Pick a ratio (free, 1:1, 4:3, 16:9 or 3:2) or enter exact dimensions in pixels.
  4. Adjust the crop box on the preview: drag it to move it and drag the edges to resize it.
  5. Choose the export format: PNG, WebP or JPG.
  6. Download the cropped image, or download all your images as a batch when you've cropped several.

Your images stay on your device: cropping happens in the browser. A circle crop leaves transparent corners, so if you choose JPG, which can't store transparency, the cropper saves it as PNG instead.

Making a round profile picture

  1. Choose the circle shape and center it on the face, leaving a little space around the head.
  2. Export as PNG to keep the corners transparent.
  3. Upload it. Most sites crop avatars into circles anyway, but starting with a circular crop shows you exactly what people will see.

Frequently asked questions

How do I crop a picture into a perfect square?

Choose the rectangle shape and the 1:1 ratio, position the box over the part you want, and download.

Does cropping reduce image quality?

It doesn't change the pixels you keep, but the image gets smaller in pixel size because the rest is cut away. Shown at the same size as before, a heavily cropped image can look softer.

Can I crop several images the same way?

Yes. Add several images at once, crop each one, and download them all together as a batch.
