Free tool: Savings Goal CalculatorWhether you're saving for a home deposit, a car, a wedding or a trip, a goal becomes much more achievable once you turn it into a monthly number. This guide shows how to work out the monthly savings you need, or how long your current savings rate will take, including the interest your savings earn along the way, with the free Savings Goal Calculator.
The two questions
- "How much do I need to save each month to reach my goal by a certain date?"
- "How long will it take at the amount I can save now?"
Both depend on the goal, what you've saved already, your monthly deposit, the interest rate and the time.
Example: saving $50,000 in 7 years
You want $50,000 in 7 years, you already have $5,000, you can save $500 a month, and your savings earn 5% a year:
- After 7 years you'd have about $57,255: $47,000 of deposits and $10,255 of interest.
- You'd reach the $50,000 goal after 74 months, or 6 years and 2 months.
Interest does real work over several years: here it adds over $10,000.
Example: what if the goal is higher?
Raise the goal to $60,000 with the same 7 years, $5,000 start and 5% interest, and $500 a month falls about $2,700 short. The monthly amount needed becomes about $527.
The formula behind it subtracts what your current savings will grow to, then works out the monthly deposit that makes up the rest:
Monthly deposit = (goal − current savings grown at interest) × i ÷ ((1 + i)^n − 1)
where i is the monthly interest rate and n the number of months.
Tips for reaching your goal
- Automate it. A transfer on payday makes saving the default.
- Keep short-term goals safe. For money you'll need within a few years, use savings accounts or CDs rather than stocks, which can fall just before you need the money.
- Use a realistic interest rate, based on what your account actually pays.
- Split big goals into milestones, such as every $10,000, to stay motivated.
- Put windfalls toward the goal, such as tax refunds and bonuses.
- Saving for a home? The Down Payment Calculator works out the cash you need, including closing costs.
How to use the Savings Goal Calculator
- Open the Savings Goal Calculator.
- Enter your savings goal and what you've saved already.
- Enter your monthly contribution, the annual return rate your savings earn, and the time frame in years.
- Read the results: whether you'll reach the goal, and when; the final balance; the total you contributed; the interest earned; and either the time to reach the goal or, if you'll fall short, the monthly amount needed to reach it on time. A chart shows your balance climbing toward the goal.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I save each month?
Divide what you still need by the number of months, then adjust for interest. To grow $5,000 to $50,000 in 7 years at 5%, you'd need about $428 a month; the calculator works it out exactly.
How long will it take to save $50,000?
It depends on your deposits and interest. Saving $500 a month at 5%, starting with $5,000, gets you there in about 6 years and 2 months.
Should I invest my savings for a goal?
For goals more than five to ten years away, investing may grow your money faster. For goals within a few years, safer options such as high-yield savings accounts protect you from a market drop right before you need the money.
